What Is a Situational Judgment Test?

A situational judgment test (SJT) is a pre-employment assessment that shows you realistic workplace scenarios and asks how you would respond. Each scenario describes a challenge you could face in the job, such as a frustrated customer, a missed deadline or a disagreement in your team, followed by several possible actions. Your task is to judge which response is the most effective.

Unlike an aptitude test, a situational judgment test does not measure what you know or how fast you can calculate. It measures how you apply judgment: how you prioritise, communicate, work with others and act with integrity when there is no single obvious answer. That is why it is often called a test of workplace behaviour or "soft skills".

For example, a scenario might say: a customer is upset because an order arrived late, and your manager is out of the office. The options could range from apologising and arranging a solution yourself, to asking the customer to call back later. Each option is scored by how well it solves the problem while staying professional.

Our free situational judgment test covers six abilities employers look for in almost every role: teamwork, customer focus, integrity, problem solving, communication and adaptability. You answer 12 short scenarios in about 5 minutes and get instant feedback on each ability, plus a review of the most effective responses.

Why Companies Use Situational Judgment Tests

Employers use situational judgment tests because they predict real job performance better than a CV alone. Two candidates with the same degree and experience can handle a difficult client or a team conflict very differently, and an SJT reveals those differences early in the process.

  • They reflect the actual job. Scenarios are based on situations people in the role really face, so results relate directly to the work.
  • They screen large volumes fairly. Graduate programmes, banks, FMCG companies and multinational firms in Indonesia receive thousands of applications. An online SJT gives every candidate the same situations and the same scoring.
  • They show values and culture fit. Many SJTs are built around a company's values, so they show how well your instincts match the way the organisation works.
  • They give candidates a realistic job preview. The scenarios help you understand what the role involves before you commit to it.

Types of Situational Judgment Test Questions

Situational judgment tests vary between employers and test publishers. Knowing the common formats helps you stay calm and read each question correctly.

Question formatWhat you do
Most effective responseChoose the single best action from four or five options (the format used in our test).
Most and least effectivePick both the best and the worst response to the same scenario.
Rank the responsesPut all the options in order from most to least effective.
Rate each responseRate every action on a scale, for example from "very ineffective" to "very effective".
Video or animated scenariosWatch a short clip of a workplace situation, then answer in one of the formats above.

The scenarios usually cover dealing with colleagues and managers, serving customers, handling ethical dilemmas, managing workload and adapting to change. Senior roles add scenarios about leading a team, making decisions with incomplete information and managing stakeholders.

Tips for Success in a Situational Judgment Test

  • Read the scenario and the question carefully. Note whether it asks what you would do or what you should do, and whether it wants the most or least effective action.
  • Research the company values. Many employers design their SJT around their values. If customer focus or integrity is central to the company, effective answers will reflect it.
  • Look for actions that solve the problem. The best responses usually deal with the issue directly, involve the right people and lead to a clear next step. Ignoring a problem or passing it on is rarely the best option.
  • Escalate sensibly. Going to your manager is right for serious issues such as misconduct, but for everyday problems, employers expect you to try a reasonable step yourself first.
  • Stay professional and fair. Avoid options that blame others, gossip, break rules or hide mistakes, even if they seem to fix the problem quickly.
  • Answer honestly and consistently. Trying to guess the "ideal" profile often leads to inconsistent answers that assessors notice.
  • Practise beforehand. Taking a practice situational judgment test online, like the one on this page, makes the format familiar so you can focus on the scenarios on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this situational judgment test free?

Yes. The test is free with no sign-up. It is scored in your browser, and your result is only sent to Talent Hunts if you choose to submit it.

How long does the test take?

Most people finish the 12 scenarios in about 5 minutes. Employer SJTs are often longer, usually 20 to 40 minutes.

Can you fail a situational judgment test?

There is no fixed pass mark. Employers compare your answers with what works best in their roles, often alongside other assessments and interviews. A higher score means your judgment closely matches effective workplace behaviour.

Is a situational judgment test the same as a psikotes?

In Indonesia, an SJT is often part of a wider psikotes online, together with personality questionnaires and aptitude tests. It focuses on workplace behaviour rather than logic or numerical reasoning.

What does my score mean?

Your score shows how often you chose the most effective response for each ability. "Strong" means your judgment closely matches effective workplace behaviour; "Room to grow" points to situations worth practising.

Do companies in Indonesia use situational judgment tests?

Yes. Banks, multinational companies, state-owned enterprises (BUMN) and graduate programmes increasingly use online SJTs to screen candidates, often together with personality and aptitude tests.

How should I prepare for an SJT?

Learn the company values, practise with sample scenarios, read every option before you answer and choose responses that solve the problem professionally.
